Good news to share!
My mom called last night and said that she doesn't have to retire this year (that's a good thing)! She had taken a rather difficult sign language test several times, and scored below the requirement. I don't know the details, but the principal at my mom's school caught an error made by the state in some notification letter and called them out on it.
The state has decided to make an exception for my mom. They're allowing her to stay for one more year - which will raise my mom's retirement package significantly (something about her staying past the age of 62 puts her in a different bracket of pay).
It's definitely random, but what a blessing!
